James Solheim's 1998 title It's Disgusting and We Ate It: True Facts From Around the World and Throughout History is still available, and for good reason: it doesn't need a pitch for your average 6th grade boy to pick it up and read it. It's not my sort of book, but the research seems fine, and it does give the students some history. I've seen groups of my most reluctant readers gathered around this at lunch-- we assume right before they dare each other to put their orange push pop in the mash potatoes and eat it.
Unfortunately, this author's only other available title is about Santa's secrets, which is a bit young for my crowd.
