Baguchinsky, Jill. Spookygirl: Paranormal Investigator.
21 August 2012, Dutton Juvenile
Violet has finally gotten to move back with her father after her mother's death while investigating a "haunted" house. Her father runs a funeral home, and didn't feel it was a good place for Violet to be-- especially since she can talk to ghosts and her presence seems to draw them. She starts a new high school, but runs into ghosts even there. Dirk was a football player killed in a drunk driving accident, and the former custodian shows up as well, but they are harmless enough. The real threat is something in the gym locker room that is so evil it takes Violet's death away. Violet wants to figure out what is going on with that, as well as the circumstances under which her mother died in the house on Logan Street. With the help of some good friends, she manages to do both. I think a sequel to this would be a great idea.
Strengths: This was a great, well-constructed ghost story that will be popular. Enough romance, enough paranormal, but also some good mysteries to be solved. Don't know how I missed this one earlier-- probably saw the girl with half a head on the cover and passed.
Weaknesses: Nothing groundbreaking, but a fun read.
