And I'm aware from talking with YA (not your readership, I know) librarians at a couple of town libraries I frequent that some YA award winners, at least from a few years back, were hard sells with their audiences. I'm thinking "Tender Morsels," which I loved, and "Octavian Nothing," another book I (an adult) liked. Our library didn't buy the sequel to "Octavian," presumably because the first book didn't circulate much. Both librarians said they don't automatically buy award winners. It may be a matter of economics. Maybe nothing is an automatic purchase anymore. I have learned that there a just some books that will not go out no matter how much you wish they would. Having said that I do have a copy of the Newberry and the others coming. The grade seven and eights in my school love many of the award winners and are especially fond of contemporary middle grade like Wonder, Mockingbird, We All Fall Down, Finding Pefect to name some. Oh and Pax is making its way through the grade sevens, as well. Now, the grade nines are all about fantasy, dystopian, fantasy, post apocalyptic, fantasy and...Manga! What I seem to be finding is that each grade (small school) seems to have a distinct reading personality. Been an interesting first few years in this new position I must say.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
