Catching Fire!

Am I the last person on the planet to read Catching Fire? A student returned it after school, so I got to take it home. And I have to say that it's even better than The Hunger Games. There have been many summaries, so I'll link to them instead of doing one myself:
Bart's Bookshelf
The Book Smugglers
Devourer of Books
Melissa's Bookshelf
Southbury Teen Book Review

Instead, I will opine about why I LOVED this. First, it grabbed me right from the start. Even though it started on an introspective note, the pain Katniss was feeling was so intense that I just wanted to know what was going to happen. Her growing realization that there was no way to return to the way things were before the games and that even if she played along with the Capitol things would not be the way she wanted them was riveting. She is torn between Peeta and Gale, knowing that her odds of saving them both are next to none. She wants to start a rebellion, but she wants to run away. She just doesn't know what to do, but knows she has to do something. She may not be able to survive.

A third book will no doubt focus on the growing rebellion in all of the districts. Katniss has the chops to be a force who can do this. She'll have help from unlikely places. There is a movie being made of The Hunger Games, which sounded good until I read IO9's opinion of this, which is right. Jane Eyre made a terrible movie.

But can I please have a mockingjay pin? It would go nicely with my collection of 1970s owls.

  1. i haven't read it, though i'm under pressure to do so. i haven't read hunger games, either, or watched a single episode of seinfeld, or read twilight, or finished the harry potter books. now i'm (not) doing it just to be contrary and stubborn. :)
but if you say so... i guess i could reconsider.

  2. Hey Ms. Yingling, it's Ms. K from the OMS book blog. I am on maternity leave and do not have access to all the newest books anymore! Also am enjoying reading some adult books now but need to keep up with middle school while I am away. I'm on a waiting list for Catching Fire so you're not the last to read it. I'll watch your blog for the latest books I should read this year. Have a great school year.

  4. No, you are not the last. I just got mine this week. Have not cracked it yet as I want to be able to just sit and read. So glad you liked it. I can't wait to get to it.
